Disease compounds tomato growers woes
I came across this article about the wave of blight that has hit Ohio, We have had one of the worst gardening seasons that I can recall because of too much rain, I have heard the same from my gardening friends in Kentucky. I have been spared from the blight so far but I know it's all around the area. I have some blight resistant varieties such as Mountain Merit and West Virginia 63 so we will see what happens.http://www.ohio.com/news/local/deadl...-woes-1.618124

Actually, This hit on Aug 27th of last year. We were so disgusted that the only growers who were notified were the large commercial growers that it was here and how to combat, it by the extension service. We got the heads up from a neighbor who grows on 10 acres and we had to mix two different fungicides in order to stop it long enough to harvest a crop. The one is a restricted use one so fortunately we were able buy it and use it. daconil alone is ineffective. the other one was called fontelis? and we have already been using it this year, just to ensure that we can get the crop harvested. As much as I am not excited to use the sprays I am thankful there is something. Almost all of the month of August is unusually cool nights. last week one night was 49 here.

I found this article that explains what ContainerTed was talking about. My local county ag agent told me this was the same time when it started to become a problem in this area. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/ny...toes.html?_r=0

No reports yet at usablight.org in Ohio.
Plenty of reports in New York where I am. |
