Rooting cuttings from determinate plants
I have three great Yellow Tumbling Tom plants growing under desk lights on my buffet in my dining room. (I have no southern exposure) Right now there are 6 tomatoes in different shades of yellow, ripening nicely, and many little green ones.
If I cut off a few stems and root them, will the new plants set fruit when it is time? Or will the fruiting session of the plants right now kind of cancel out more fruit because they are determinate? Maybe the new roots on the new stems will make whole new plants out of them. If it will work, I will make some nice plants to put outside in a big pot in the spring. I have done this with indeterminate plants and there was no problem. Just don't know about these determinates !! .........Doris, NJ |

There is a thread in the starting from seed section about planting cuttings. I was told there that you can make cuttings from determinate plants. I don't know for sure but I think each rooted cutting will behave like a new seedling. I'm not sure if you can use cuttings from the branches that already have fruit on them. Soon a person who knows for sure will answer.

Surprisingly, I found one year that it even works for the very short Dwarf types. I lost a Golden Dwarf Champion to disease - a friend cut off one small branch from the plant that they had, I rooted it - and ended up with a full grown plant from that cutting. Ain't nature wonderful!!!

I'm going through this right now Doris - my red robin dwarf cross that I have is Det. - the top of it has some kind of CRUD going on with the leaves and they are dying - at the bottom of the plant a sucker started growing - I just cut it off, rooted, and now its its own little plant; buds and all !
Grow for it ~ Tom ps. not sure what color the fruits are yet on them - but I've got knickel sized maters ~

I'm glad to hear I can take cuttings from the tumbling tom even tho it is a determinate. I'll make some plants for a nice big outside pot.
I haven't planted my Red Robins because these tumbling toms are taking up all the room on my buffet. LOL Thanks, all............ Doris, NJ |

FWIW, cuttings come along VERY fast - fast enough so that when I realized I was short on Sungolds last year for people who wanted seedlings, I basically chopped the tops off 6" plants and soon had 2-for-1, ready to hand out.
