Since we're on the topic of watering can someone recommend a good outdoor faucet (hose bib)? Cheap Chinese lasts about 3 years.

You know I tried everything and they are crap.
I had one last about a week and it stripped out.
What i put in the back is an washing machine shut off valve and the front I put in a 3/4 ball valve.
Here is what I did.
I had a 1/2 line stubbed out of my house.
I have a 3/4 to 1/2 bushing going into the back side of the valve.
The other end has a 3/4 brass nipple a 3/4 brass elbow and a brass 3/4 to male hose bib connection.
You can also get what the call full flow 1/2 ball valves too.
And you can get them with tee or round handles.
Just go to a plumbing supply place and stay out of the big box china stores.

If you want to order on line these are good valves too.

They also make something called a globe valve that has more water flow just make sure you install it in the right direction or it will leak it has an arrow on the side of it.
This is not to be mistaken for a gate valve you dont want to use one of them as they will leak or start leaking in no time.

Here is a globe valve.

Dramm!

Several years ago, there was a thread on DIY water wands made from PVC tubing and elbows, so you could make the exact length and configuration you wanted. I thought that was a good idea, but the Dramm works so well I never needed to make my own.

I also sometimes use just the Dramm breaker on the hose, with no wand. That works nicely in the community gardens with narrow paths, where a wand would get in the way.

Thanks, Worth. That's what happened to mine, too. I turn them off tight. I knew this one was going because off is a full 360 from where it was when I installed it (replacing one that had been there for 40 years). Then a couple of days ago it would go full on when I hit what should be off.

Mine sit atop vertical pipes in the yard coming up off of the main water line into the house.

If I'm really careful I can get it to cut off, at least until I can get a new one and then make myself go out in the alley and dig out the cutoff.

I did check at a local plumbing shop last fall when I replaced my water heater but it sold the same stuff as Home Depot.

If I wasn't so lazy I'd put gate valves below all of the hose bibs then I'd at least not have to dig out the cutoff every time one of them goes bad. But then I'd have to figure out who last borrowed the pipe cutter and threader and didn't return them.

I'm going to try one of those Aqualines you linked to, shipping wasn't as bad as I expected.

gary

After doing some googling I find that what I need are called "garden valves", since they mount vertically, as opposed to "hose bibs" which mount horizontally.

I use brass ball valve in front of the wand.
I also have standing faucet to wash things, hands, fill watering can, etc.
Looks like this. The valve itself is globe type.

Of course I have separate hose connection.

I had this old valve I guess I better rebuild it as opposed to replacing it with China junk.

The valve is rebuilt and back on the shelf, I just happen to keep spare valve rebuild parts around.

Look at that big ol' "USA" on it! Don't see that much anymore.

We never throw anything away so there's 7 or 8 laying around. I'll have to see if I can get parts for them.

It is made by ABP (Arrowhead Brass and Plumbing) still made in the USA since 1936.
