Help! What is damaging my new plants??
Hi all, novice Tomato grower here. I'm sure there is a quick answer somewhere here that I haven't been able to find yet, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what seems to be infecting my new plants. I just built a couple of raybo's Earthtainers, following the instructions every step of the way, including the 3:2:1 grow media mix, fertilizer strip, etc. I planted store transplants about 3 weeks ago, and babying them since. They're growing great, but tonight I noticed some of the stems starting to discolor, turning a disconcerting gray color. Attached are a couple close up shots.
Any and all ideas/advice are VERY welcome!!!! Thanks in advance!!! |

I can't see any disease or related issue. Sometimes, transplant "shock" causes a temporary issue - so be patient and they will grow out of it. Sounds like you have done everything right - just hang in there.
I am over here in Campbell and this cold weather snap may be to blame. Some of my plants put in a week ago:  Raybo

Thanks for the quick reply! I certainly hope this is just transplant shock. I've been covering them on the cold nights (including tonight). In the photos what I'm specifically worried about is the darker discoloration on the stem. In the first image, the shorter stem that extends from the center toward the 3 o'clock position in the photo (the whole stem is darkening), and then in the larger stem directly opposite (where it is starting to darken at the stem/leaf juncture). I'll keep an eye on them and check back in if it worsens. Additionally, I have to say I am enamored with the Earthtainer. Thank you so much for all your work in developing what seems to be such a great system!! Marc |

It looks like it's turning purple, which would most likely be the result of cold. Most likely nothing to worry about.

Yes, purpling of the stem is common when it's cold as the plant does not take up phosphorus....it's not a problem.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the feedback. I guess after putting in so much effort in building the earthtainers and babying these along, I'm a little quick on the panic switch!
