Annette, I actually raised Blue Lake Green Beans in a 10 gallon container. The yield was not what I would normally like, but, like you said, we gardeners do what we have to do.

Thanks for the info, Ted, especially the tip on using a bit of finely ground red clay. Scientific data and studies are good, good theories can be good, but experience like yours is "golden".

Annete, I aslo use a lot of 5 gallon buckets with Sunshine 4 in, I add a bit of lime and use Galia all purpose which seems to do well.

Is it the big bale with the orange and white label? That's what I buy at Menards.

My take on compost in container media - don't let it get too cold at night. I'd say below 50 degrees or so starts to risk pythium, stem rot, and the media going anaerobic.

Yep, there were some bales and also a black and purple bag I think it said Divergia (I could be wrong)

The bale will fit perfectly inside a black plastic mortar mixing tub; they're with the concrete stuff. I drop the bale in the tub, open the plastic on top, and pour a gallon of water into it. You want it moist when you work with it.
