We used to get these big yellow sweet Spanish onions at the store that were 1/2 the size of a soccer ball.

I dont see them anymore but was told you could get them in the valley down south.

They were so good it was a sin to cook with them.
They were so good you didn't want to eat them you wanted to save them.

hEY tig You know that isn't me ,That guy ain't diggen em with a backho! This thred is realy getting scientific on growing onions. Heck I just throw on some cow poop,some 12-12-12 and a shot of epsom salts,hope for some rain , change the oil in the backho and I'm good to go! Those guys in the UK make work out of growing onions but they get biguns! How much snow ya got? We got about 2ft. Give that old moose an extra bale of hay he's gona have to go to work come spring. GOOD GARDENING TO YA YOPPER

yopper i'm reading on another forum where guys in the UP are just deluged with snow and it's normal for their location. it seems they get 2' a week, sometimes every other day! got 10-12" yesterday. take care.

Where I live, most people fertilize onions, shallots and garlic with extra potassium, with patentkali. They claim extra nitrogen is no good.

Where does this difference comes from?

I have no idea I got it from what I read on university web sites and a little common since.

The onion needs to grow to put out leaves, every leaf is another layer on the bulb.
Right now some of my stems are 3/4 to 1 inch or 19mm in diameter.
I have no idea what I am doing.

If you have good basic fertility, calcium nitrate can work really well for side-dressing. Watch out for thrips. They can turn the foliage silvery overnight.

Trying Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0 S24 this year. Cheap if you live where there are AG chemi stores. I got 40lbs for $15.
