Slugs aren't a novelty round in Minnesota. In most of Minnesota, we can only hunt deer with a shotgun, and slugs are what we use.

Some states have what they call a primitive hunting season that opens up before regular hunting season. You are allowed to use muzzle loaders. Now to me a muzzle loader is one that looks like something out of the 1800's. What they have today are muzzle loaders that go way beyond that. About the only thing muzzle loaders is you load from the muzzle. People put scopes on them they have special bullets and even a cover for the cap. Some states outlaw all of this some dont like Texas. I mean really is this primitive muzzle loading. |

We can use muzzle loaders as well, but it is still smooth bore rather than rifled. There are low-population forested areas of Minnesota where one can hunt with a rifle, but pickin's are slim there. One can't exactly crack off an entire 10 rd. magazine in 15 seconds with a muzzle loader like one can with a rifle.
When I lived in rural northern Missouri, the local economy relied heavily on tourists that would come from out of state to bag corn-fed bucks. Even moreso now that the cannery that drives the economy is closing next summer. There were so many deer in the woods that it wasn't a matter of IF you hit a deer, but WHEN. When my wife called the sheriff's department to report the deer she hit, they didn't really care. NW IA was similar, I saw deer every day either coming or going to work. I usu. had to stop or slow down at least once each week. I like deer just a little more than rats. I will at least eat a deer. |

I understand that copper pennies driven deep in trunk will kill a tree also.

From a Texan to someone in Arkansas:
Cut a 2x4 a quarter inch longer than the load-bearing 30-30, place board and remove gun, shoot tree until there's nothing left. |
