I grew it for several years and thought it was the most productive as far as numbers of any of the hearts I have ever grown. The biggest factor in size was limiting the number of stems as Anna Russian will send out a massive amount of suckers and forks resulting in tiny fruit not much over a few ounces. Early on in the season when the plant was young and kept to a few stems I would get plenty of fruits in the one pound range but most were smaller. I even had one or two reach the pound and a half stage; but as the heat would get up I would allow far more stems to develop for shade and the result would be far smaller fruit.

I've been growing AR for 15years? Maybe more. Always from TGSupply along with all their Oxhearts offered. (all but two) Zone 5a Catskill mnts at some altitude. My temps right now are 80's day and 50-60 nights.
Like every year a few days hit 90 but nights are cool. Heavy thunderstorms every 3-5 days. One 10day dry spell two weeks ago but no suffering of plants. Every year ARussian has been steady more than most. Always 7-8 oz perfect heart, no folds. Usually on the early side just behind SunGold and the cherries and grapes. It is never the first but right behind...this year it looks like GermanRedStrawberry and Russian117 will ripen first in the hearts. CherokeeChocolate will most likely be my first BLT. Or new to me GirlGirl'sWT. AnnaRussian will always be on my grow list. Our favorite fresh tom slicer for salads and sandwiches. Never fails no mater the weather. Not a huge producer but consistent. I don't recall even getting blemished or ill-shaped fruit. Probably since blossom set is a bit later and it ripens late July-early August when our temps are steady unlike late Spring here where temps jump all over. I'll take a closer look next weekend. I believe i have 4 AR plants. Did see quite a few fused stems this year but did not take note yet what ones. |
