Default Summer going way too fast for me.

Gardening is slowly drawing to a close. My tomatoes are still mostly green. Sweet corn is questionable. I think it needs another week or so to be at its peak. I'd rather wait then pick it before it's ready. My Cantaloup is still flowering. I don't think it will develop in time. But we shall see. Some tomatoes are flowering like crazy, but never develop any fruit. Example: Blondkopfchen. One a few feet away is. I'm not upset. It is what it is. However next year I am getting weed barrier cloth. Couldn't keep up with the weeds, grass. Primarily around tomatoes. Let's water in. Some tomatoes will be ready for picking this weekend. Can I pick them as they are turning red. Let them sit on window sill?
One thing I've learned is plan a better layout. Garden looks a bit sloppy. Weeds don't help!
I didn't use fencing either. Lost 6 corn stalks and nothing else. Still I will use fencing next year.

Hi Christian,

I've been wondering how your season's been going. There should still be plenty of time left for tomatoes to ripen yet. Mine are really starting to pick up in the numbers of tomatoes ripening. As for cantaloupe, if I recall correctly, one year I noticed my first cantaloupe sets forming in first week of August, and I had several ripe ones before frost. I think the male flowers generally are the first to open, and later it's both the female(which of course become the fruits) and males blooming together. I hope you have success with them.

With gardening, a big part of learning comes with experience. I've been gardening for many years, and still am learning.

You can pick your tomatoes as soon as you see some color changing and place them anywhere out of the direct sunlight; so a counter would probably be better than a windowsill unless it's on the north side of the house. I put mine on a picnic table on the covered porch.

Tell me about it !
We have not yet have a real summer up here this year. I have vey healthy and vigorous plants but fruits set is way behind. If September also turns out to be lousy then forget it .
