I also hear "grease pencils", but haven't tried.

I use sharpie on address label and stick it on glass ( when fermenting) . Afterwards I have put them in the dishwasher ( w/out removing the label) several times and they come out intact.
In the garden my tags are still readable after overwintering.

How can it.
It is graphite a form of carbon mixed with clay.
We are lucky we can still find drafting and art pencils with softer graphite to make the letters darker or lighter.
Not assuming everyone knows this I will post a link to how you can pick out pencils to do this.
Your common pencil is a 2 or HB.
