I also hear "grease pencils", but haven't tried.

I use sharpie on address label and stick it on glass ( when fermenting) . Afterwards I have put them in the dishwasher ( w/out removing the label) several times and they come out intact.
In the garden my tags are still readable after overwintering.

How can it. It is graphite a form of carbon mixed with clay. We are lucky we can still find drafting and art pencils with softer graphite to make the letters darker or lighter.
