Has anybody ever seen this before.
While I was slicing a tomato open tonight, I might mention "perfectly" for this to happen, One of the seeds was sprouting inside the tomato. I believe that this Tomato was field grown near Oak Grove La. The tomato is still firm, no blemishes or soft spots. In fact if you look closely, you will notice that there is another seed that is also sprouting.

I'll be darn. That would freak me out I think. Very interesting. I wonder if the extreme heat is the cause?
Anyone else ever see this. I would want to plant those seedlings just to see how well they might grow. They seem to want out. |

I saw that last winter in a store bought Campari tomato that had sat on the counter a long time. I saved seeds from it because that was so weird, a first for me and they are growing now.

Heirloom - It has been a hell of a last 10 months, bought a new house, Planted a garden and lost it taking care of family obligations - married off my daughter. Bought a new truck in Jan and put 12,000 on in the first 3 months driving back and forth between here and Dallas taking care of my Dad. Finally catching my breath and looking forward to SEC football. Otherwise doing pretty good. lol BTW Mississippi is Hot as Hell in the Summer.

I have seen this a few years ago in an overripe tomato; in fact it had more than one sprout

Yes,I've seen it happen many times under the following circumstances.
Soft fleshed varieties such as the gold/red bicolors and fruit named ones such as Nectarine,Peach Blow Sutton,etc. Fruits sent long distances,for us in the US mainly from FL and Mexico and then stored for use in warehouses before being used I have not seen it in overripe tomatoes,whether OP or F1,but then most of the time I don't let fruits get overripe on the plant since they then drop off to the ground or whatever. There are a few folks who will actually plant over ripe tomatoes,the whole fruits and then get a little forest of seedlings,seperate them and replant. Carolyn

In layman's terms the tomato seeds have gone through all of the environmental changes and triggers that tell the seeds to sprout.
