Skyreacher from Tom Wagner
Every year I seem to find a new-to-me tomato that really impresses.
This year I found two -- Big Beef and Skyreacher. Big Beef needs no more cheerleading, because numerous threads at Tomatoville are infected with praise for this variety Skyreacher, however, has not been widely discussed. Even though it was on the cover of at least one seed catalog this year. The fruit characteristics of this variety are really good, but on top of that, Skyreacher was spectacularly vigorous and disease resistant in our fields (and very productive). Great work Tom! |

It was a big hit for me, too. I had expected it to be a small tomato, but mine were medium to large sized, good flavor and excellent yield.

Any pictures from you two? (yes, I'll google it.)
Wow, Big Beef. If Mr. Hempel is impressed, it must be good - so many praises heaped on it already, but if breeders like it too, it must be something. MAde me curious and it's already on my MMMM wish list. |

We got hit hard with late blight about 3 or 4 years ago and Skyreacher was the only tomato to survive.
Mine were smaller than those in your pics (small slicer/saladette size). I was contemplating growing it next season and was reluctant because I desired a larger tomato. If you get a chance I would be interested to know your seed source. Will see if I can dig up some old photos. Beautiful tomato...good flavor. Michael |
