Shchelkovskiy Ranniy (aka Schelkovski Early aka Schelicauski) tomato is Russian CV from 1980s. Ultra-early, compact (h40-50cm), rugose/potato mixed leaf, small red globe fruit 50-130 g, excellent sweet/tart flavor.
However I've seen RL looking plants as well.

Well now that I know this information ...I will stick with the Potato leaf expression of the variety that I have ....It is awesome for containers ! I don't think there is anything else quite like it .
I think Tatiana's has both PL and RL varieties listed at her site Just check the alphabetical listing etc.

I'm on the back side of harvesting my siletz and legend. We are getting "warmer" weather now, and the textures have not improved.
So I took the fruits from both plants and sauced them together. Holy cow! What was lacking in sliced texture was paid back tenfold in sauce flavor. I've grown paste tomatoes that didn't even touch these. Off the charts amazing! My final recommendation for these two is for saucing only. Incredible! |

Very interesting ........I continue to be impressed with Siletz.....I also continue to be underwhelmed with Legend this year ....In the same Parthenocarpic bunch I have been very impressed again with Gold nugget ...I think Gold nugget is a much overlooked variety for the cool coastal Tomato success .

I've picked a few Maglia Rosas, several New Girl F1 are blushing, way ahead of the rest of the pack. We had a hot spring, followed bt very cool temporature and rain for a long time on the westcoast, so most plants have one or two large fruits without any small ones to follow.

I let my Maglia Rosa turn red before I eat them. They have a decent shelf life, so it takes a while. I think I like all tomatoes best when they are at at an over-ripe stage, so maybe that's just my own bias. Maglia Rosa is good when pink; I just think it's great when red.

update ...this one has knocked it out of the park for me ......it seems adaptable and will produce lots of blooms and produce fruit early ..in shade , sun , cool, heat (tested in various locations) containers ...it seems to produce a wide variety of fruit sizes as an adaptation to various conditions cherry to small saladette size ...but lots of fruit and good taste you will always have fruit going with this indeterminate container friendly variety while you wait for the later varieties . I already have collected and treated seed for next year from this surprise contender !

I tried my first vine-ripened Maglia rosa yesterday: it was pink enough, with golden and a few greenish streaks. The taste was a decent, acidic tomato taste: not great, and definitely not the delicious flavor of other Artisan varieties I have tried (Blush, Pink Tiger) So, made the decision to eat them only when they're truly ripen and have dark enough color, even if that means over-ripe... edit: it's interesting how many different preferences there are. I was instructed to not allow MR to get too ripe, but eat them before the peak color.. it seems in our rainy season, anything even slightly under-ripe tastes just .. blah. Dear friends of the Tomato,
I have gone silent for the last 70 days ..... I most definitely have not left the scene. I had a sudden oppourtunity to Move from Campbell River . ....to .South 1 .5 hours to the slightly warmer / drier climate of NANAIMO ! It was a terrible "turn on a dime manuever" unthinkable just a few months ago . but OPPOURTUNITY IT WAS. As far as my Campbell River garden went ....there were lots of tears as all the plants had to be culled /cleaned / harvested at high season early(early August) ..... I had people come through and pick as much as they could ........ and then again ....and then gleen again ....geeese . No time for processing/storing .....I did manage to save about 40 varieties of seeds .. I had to literaly give many of my containers away .....and to the dump ..to expidite the site clean up. And worst of all due to a shortened time line for moving "Prep".... I had to power saw my 15 sided dome structure down .... not recycle parts / bolts and struts / hubs and dispose in dump . THAT WAS HARD ! ( But a Dome is kind of like selling a house with a "pool" or indoor Sauna most buyers do not want the "option") I will be moving soon and then I get to start the Tomato cycle again in the new place. Moving only 90 minutes south but there are subtle climate changes .. from a Cool pacific maritime climate ..with lots of frost free days . To a pacific cool mediteranean climate with fewer days of percipitation and less percipitation than 90 minutes north. More sun days in the growing season and the seasonal edges etc.. 90 minutes south of Campbell River has about 25% less rain (and rain days) and a warmer annual mean temp. but suprizingly not necessarily more frost free days. so I will post my Cool coastal observations on the run/move 2016 in next post .

Observations on the run/ move 2016 for cool climate
Observations on the run/ move 2016 for cool climate Tomatoes :
Out of many varieties ...these Compact cool early continued to impress : . Yaponski karlik Cyril's Choice Roza vetrov Mano Sophies' choice Silvery Fir Betalux put into 2 gallon buckets Chibikko was up to the challenge and was very very productive. I got seeds for Red Dwarf (Roter Zwerg )(HEY thanks Bower !) also this year and it was a very early productive smashing success ! It was very complimentary to small ones like Venus and Yellow Pygmy and Hahms gelbe, Rejina red , Rejina Yellow etc. Siletz is the variety I will now choose over legend ... for me ...also Vzyryv was not an improvement over Belyi Naliv and much prefer Belyi Naliv ... Dwarf Arctic Rose and Boronia were Dwarf project Winners !.... very productive and loaded with fruit. (MASSIVE fruit production) "Black bear" Compact tomato was very good and compact ..... Buckbee (from tatiana's) kept producing fruit early all season hot dry/ wet shade ....fruit all season long .... Lollipop was a suprise ..taste sweet with a bit of perfumey ..Like candy ... Fargo and Matina as always most dependable ! I think I have a Cosmonaut Volkov and EM Champion cross ! very interesting ! Thanks to Container Ted for sending me some Budai Torpe seeds for next year as well . Good Harvest /processing etc. to you all ! I can hardly wait for next year growing season already !
