I planted out all the backyard garden beds before we took a trip to Florida in early November, so now we're harvesting arugula, 4 varieties of lettuce, 3-4 kinds of kale, green onions, turnip greens, ruby streaks mustard, snap and snow peas, and tokyo bekana. Still not ready: carrots, beets, turnips (3-4 kinds), rutabagas, broccoli.
Still harvesting a few stray pole beans, and one tomato plant is still alive. |

By the time I went to BBS ( in late October ), they had no seeds anymore, what so ever.
Probably I have mentioned this already !!I has sum mustard, coriander and Fenugrrek seeds in my spice cabinet. . So I just sprinkled some of those on the garden and covered them with some soil and pine straw. I think mustard came up first and now have true leaves. Today I noticed that another variety sprouting. I guess it is coriander/cilantro. Amazingly they have survived over night lows down to 28F. And many nights under 35 F. Also planted 18 cloves of garlic two weeks ago. They are up and growing fast. I must add that my garden is not ready , as I have buried and mixed in lots of fall leave , pine straw and wood ash to over winter. So what I have done is just for fun and surprise. So far so good.

Cilantro does great down here in the winter but then I don't have any fresh tomatoes for salsa so what is the point.
I have carrots up along with mustard which I am already eating. My cucumbers and beans are about through so I will be pulling them tomorrow Bill |

I planted cilantro in my greenhouse tomato containers this summer, which stayed puny until the tomato plants were pulled. Now I'm having cilantro with everything... except fresh tomatoes.
Also in the greenhouse this year, a couple of chard plants (was amazed to see that they do indeed keep growing in the short days!), parsely and lots of celery. I have some leek seedlings that haven't been transplanted yet. Very lazy about that since I still have a heap of baby onions (no-necks) with green tops stowed in the porch. Also harvested some awesome sweet cabbages from my friend's farm, so less of a hurry to put in greens under lights. One more green in a pinch - chickweed volunteered as a weed in one of the tubs and I let it come. I actually like it quite a bit, and subs in for lettuce or sprouts in a sandwich pretty well. I wish I had "Miner's Lettuce" but so far haven't managed to get any seeds. What I really want before doing some winter food things indoors, is to finish the job of renewing my window seals first, so the likelihood of winter aphids is pushed closer to zero percent! |
