Yes, wood ashes may be a source of free potassium but they will raise your pH right at the base of your plant and that may not be what you want.

My pH is fine and so is my potassium level so I add nothing.

Eggshells may be a nice addition for those of you in root knot nematode territory. I don't know if this helps but I read that crushed eggshells attract "good" nematodes which feed on the "bad" root knot nematodes. I would definitely do this if I had that problem just in case it works.
