Snake Spit
Yesterday, I was out where my brother was picking dewberries. I noticed a lot of what I grew up calling snake spit or frog spit on the plants. I knew a long time ago that it was an insect leaving the spit/foam looking stuff on the plants. My brother made a comment that there must be a lot of snakes here this year.
So I had to look up the name of the bug - it's called a spittlebug. Here's some info including how to kill them if you choose to do so https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/pla...ug-control.htm A link to what spittlebugs look like https://www.google.com/search?q=spit...dpr=1.25#spf=1 I'm sure there are a lot of made up names and myths about what things really are. |

There are alot of those "common" names out there : Snake flower, Horse nettle, Horseradish, dogwood, cat's tail, Foxglove...
I don't know which insect (s) do that spitting but I think they do that to protect their eggs. Some insect do something like thick spider web. Some even make something like that with mud.

I have always just known it as spittle bug. It looks like a leaf hopper covered in spit. I was a curious kid.
