I have been trying to get rid of slugs with DE for the past two years and it isn't very effective if it is effective at all. Actually Sevin is one of the few things that will kill them but I don't use it on cabbage and lettuce which are the plants that they give me the most problems on.
You might want to try Sevin dust and lightly dust the ground around the plant and the stem. That is what I do to keep Squash Vine Borers out of my squash and it works great but has to be replenished after a heavy rain or they will get into the stems. I have used a lot of slug pellets over the years and still have an abundance of slugs. I really don't know if they are effective or not. I sprinkle them under my cabbage and keep them there refreshing them occasionally only to find slugs in the cabbage when I cut them. Maybe they are killing some of them but not enough. I just plant way more cabbage than I need. Since I have a huge bag of food grade DE I may try mulching under the cabbage with it and see if it will do any good. I think I'll try mixing the food grade with the small grain that I use for seed starting and add a little of the coarse grain that I use in grafting. I'll try it this fall and see if it works and if it does I'll certainly let everyone know. Bill |

It was too late to edit the above. I meant to add: When I asked a question a lot like this one - someone suggested wrapping the toothpicks and plant with foil. I tried that this year. It was a really wet early spring and the foil caused roots to grow under the foil. It didn't seem to hurt anything, but it was odd seeing roots growing above ground.
