Default Is there a genetic component to more double heart expression?

Hi all ,

I was wondering if I Picked a huge double heart fruit for seed saving ...

(Velmozha ) am I actually selecting for more likelihood of

doubleheart expression with the single hearts in the future generations ?

Is there a genetic component to form more double hearts in the mix and environment ?

or is double heart expressions just luck of the year ...or draw ?

The chances don't increase if you save seeds from a double heart vs from a regular fruit on the same plant. But some varieties are known for producing a higher than usual number of double hearts, and that's likely genetic in nature. Here's a search on Tania's database looking for the term "double heart".

As for Velmozha, Tania's site doesn't mention double hearts, but going by the pictures of the fruit, it looks like it's not unusual at all for the variety.

Sometimes, double blooms are environmental and not genetic. Often, these things are an interaction between environment and genetics, i.e., genetics that make double blooms more likely under certain conditions. If you have a plant and plants from seeds saved from it that throw an unusual number of double fruit all season year after year, there's likely a genetic aspect to it.

Yes ....so if for some reason the plant is throwing out a lot of large double hearts

then save the seeds and see if the next year and different set of season conditions a similar thing happens ........subtle genetic ...bias toward the

double hearts is interesting to me.
