Default Digging up plants and putting them in containers?

Hi, I'm a new poster and could use your advice. I planted a variety of tomatoes the last weekend of March. Half are in containers and the other half are in-ground (clay soil mixed with compost)

The plants in the ground are not doing as well, and I think it's because we have pocket gophers. Their roots probably aren't able to spread because of under ground tunnels. I had one plant mysteriously vanish without a trace, and now realize that's likely the reason.

So I'm considering digging up my plants, and potting them. There are only 6. They have been in the ground for about 4 weeks and are about 15" high (and a little leggy even though full sun). . My container plants are much more vigorous.

Has anyone done this and have advice? Think it would kill the plants?
