Default Celtuce lettuce

This is supposed to be delicious, a crunchy veggie with nutty flavor...
So impressed with the history, and the beautiful pics on-line. But: despite our best watering efforts, the results are rather dry and chewy stalks... very fibrous and not very yummy.
This is often compared to asparagus in my region and the local name also is 'asparagus lettuce', which is just as well since asparagus stalks also tend to get dry and fibrous in real life (outside the top chefs blogosphere)

Any tips how to do it better?
