Tom,
That’s a great looking tomato – but it’s not the real BCW. There has been an impostor running around for some time now. I grew it for a number of years before I learned about the real deal. Here are a couple of posts that might be of interest. http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=1765&highlight=Box+car+willie+imp oster http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=5084&highlight=Box+Car+Willie

Agree very strongly that it isn't Box Car Willie.
There's a good picture of it at TGS and another one in my book. I hadn't realized that the wrong BCW originated with TT that far back. Interesting, and another reason for me to try and pay more attention to keeping fresh stock of the ones in my book or ones that I really like that appeared after I had to make the decisions back in 1998 as to which varieties were to go in that book. Problem is that these days I can only grow 14 plants/year and someone else does all the work. Today Freda brought in a nice partially ripe tomato and I asked what it was. She asked if it was important that I really knew what she brought in to me. I told her that I had four varieties out there that were brand new and I really did want to know what it was. She went, came back, and said it's Sherrill. Good, now I can judge the taste correctly, etc. Is it me or does there really seem to be more and more varieties offered by certain commercial places that are wrong for a given variety?

I agree with you both. And in my case so far all wrong types I've had this year have come from a few commercial vendors. BC has been where I seen and experienced the most. Jay

Carolyn it's not just you, I've been having problems with commercial seed too. If not the wrong variety it's ones that have sterile seeds. I've had problems with seed companies that I've used for years as well as a couple of others. I'm 62 and have been growing tomatoes a long time and I didn't used to have much of this problem until the last few years. My 2 cents.

Hello Tom,
It's been a while, how are you? I will be picking my 1st BCW today and i'll save you seeds. My stock came from Dr. Male's generous offer last year. I've been having a lot of 'puter issues lately and am seldom online anymore. Will talk soon....JJ61 |

Here is my BCW - the 'Real Deal' - my seed came from Craig. They're a little more red in person.

Yeah Jerry, mine look the same. A lovely shade of orange
with red flesh and a nice taster as well. Uniformed 10 oz., blemmish-free globes. I'm getting good production despite its' poor sun location. Will grow again. Best of luck Tom and let me know if you need a pair of battery powered socks....JJ61 |
