Blackbear 2019 Varieties (cutbacks)

Hi all ,
It has been a slow winter and spring on the West Coast .
I am still cleaning up from the December 2018 storms etc.
And the snow was very late in the back yard sticking till about March 10th etc.

I have cut back to about 50 varieties this year ...and plan to cutback to between 40 and 50 for 2020.

Nobody here is going to want for tomato with the moderation of varieties grown ..lol

Adelaide Festival was my favourite tomato last year

Hmmm it could be …"JUST " Adelaide festival ..

it was stripey as expected ….but produced prolifically

many large / large-medium tomatoes ….In a container ..


A real Monster ...Mutant ….

I couldn't believe it ...something had to be not quite right ….

I got seeds from the monster producer and will try to recreate

last years super duper unbelievable performance.

Interesting list. I have grown at least a few of those. Ditmarsher and Fuzzy Wuzzy come to mind.
The latter had delicious fruits, but sadly, the plant was susceptible to mold...

yup ...less varieties this year....
but there will be no want of tomatoes...….

Some old Favorites …...and some new ones to trial …


But ya can't grow them all...…..

Boronia was good too, an OK black dwarf.
Sophie's choice was a reliable pumper of red tomatoes. (for some reason, the birds / a bird fell in love with that plant some years ago and felt the urge to peck on the fruits..!!)

Looks like full list! I too want to downgrade on varieties but have no self control...
I loved Ditmarsher, was so early and so easy in small container. Zlotoe serdse and Yaponskiy karlik good for container too. Rose quartz I grew twice and both times it was meh, not sure why it does not like my garden.

Boronia is good when balanced with Chernamor and Black Bear and

smaller Bundaberg Rumball


I used to think that Sophie's choice and Cyril 's choice made a good duo.

I have rose quartz multiflora and it works well in containers or in ground …..

Glad to see you growing Alaska, Black Bear. They were very tasty and did well outdoors the year we grew them, but we didn't save seed thinking they would be crossed out there in bee world. Definitely one of the better early determinates.
