Grease pencil (also called a china marker) works great on tags and doesn't fade.

I need a toe tag. I dropped a container with achocha/lady's slipper in it. The plant didn't make it.

the original game plan for later in the season was to hang the tags on the plants.
then it dawned on me I can put them on the tomato stakes.
So I can point and blurt out the name.

I use grease pencils, also called china markers - they are wrapped with paper which you unroll from the top. The words last longer than the labels will.
