I saw that for the first time last year, and was going to comment back in May but I wanted to wait until I saw it again this year to confirm. A few days back I found it on Big Beef. Today in another patch I saw it on an OP.
I have to conclude it happens when there is too much nutrition for the number of tips. I don't know which, I assume nitrogen. I have not changed the way I plant too much, but the last couple years I started pruning suckers regularly. There is just too much energy being made for so few outlets, something has to give. I never saw this before I started pruning suckers. I posted about it last year...I was shocked. So yeah, I guess I've been thinking of them leaks in a pipe. Too much nitrogen pressure!? Something's got to give! Pics below is a Big Beef this past week, full sun compost rows, 1 ft spacing and kept to one stem. That stem is coming out of the end of a flower truss. I just saw one today in the back yard on an OP plant held to 2 or 3 stems as well. |
