I guess I am just simple and low cost on my raised beds. Since I live in neighborhood with privacy fences I am lining the fence with boxes and then will also consider hanging some old gutters above or PVC vertical pipes.

Found what looks like 100 gallon containers some trees came in on the jobsite.

I will share something that I learned lately. My father has some cows.. pets really. there are large 25 gallon buckets of range cubes (mineral snacks). If you know a cattle farmer go ask him if you can have them or offer $5 per tub. I drill holes in them and they make great pots or even compost bins. You can also check with your local rural feed store as they often have these things sitting around and will sell cheap. Buying an actual $25 gallon pot for plants would cost you $40.
In this pic I am showing some of them. There are different colors (white, black, red, blue). The 2 on bottom I have a compost bed in them. Lids have tiny hold drilled for air and moisture. Others I use as a patio coffee table, and others for storage. |

About those tubs, every brand is different. The ones my grandpa buys are yellow. I once got excited about using them when I saw a pile of old ones, until I tried to pick one up and the plastic crumbled away in my hand. Unfortunately, whatever brand this was did not use UV inhibitors in the plastic. Other people on here have posted that they have had great success. The good tubs look to be either black or blue, so avoid the yellow ones.

I have couple of round ones. I have planted my ornamental peppers in one of them (about 7 or 8 plants). (took the plugs at the bottom off) and using the other one as water storage , to quick fill the watering can. They are real sturdy, The previous owners left them back in the pasture.

I should say I do actually have three of them, one is currently holding planter mix and the other two are upside down in the garden. I use the other two when we are making the mix. We mix in a cement mixer and it's big enough to get most of the mix into the container when we dump it. I have it covered with a piece of plywood framed out with 1x2's.
So, yes I have three but I have owned those for about three years now and don't want to use them for anything else because then I have to find something else to fill with mix. I looked all over starting last fall knowing I wanted a garden this year but could not find anyone with spares. They really do hoard them around here, lol. I also have 5 gallon containers with the mix in them. We had thought to use the one full big black one when we made the last trellis's but couldn't figure out how to secure them to it. I also realized we had not drilled any holes in it so it was useless as is and I really didn't want to mess with moving that mix somewhere else at the time. My garden is on weed cloth and I don't want to be poking holes into it. So, we wound up not using it after all.
