Default Never leave town in August

This is a portion of what I came back to. I harvested more in the last two days than I did all season last year. Thanks TV!

Nice haul! I wish I had the room to grow tomatillos.

Tomatillos are so much easier to grow than tomatoes but they definitely get big. Next year I'm only planting 2-3 plants. Five was way too many.

Fabulous! Can't imagine an August harvest anything like that. So, do tomatillos like the same treatment as tomatoes for the most part? May have to try one next year. They make an astounding sauce for chicken enchiladas!

Great haul! If I left town in July, I'd come home to a bunch of worm eaten, bird pecked fruit on my plants!

But we don't usually harvest many tomatoes before mid-late July, if then. This year has been an exception with hot and dry weather. Yes, tomatillos get the same treatment as tomatoes without the disease issues, so no spraying is usually needed. I plant them and stake/cage in the same way as an indeterminate tomato. My understanding is that you need two plants for pollination purposes. They grow really quickly, so start them a couple of weeks after you start your tomato seeds. I've never saved seeds and am a little intimidated by the process, otherwise I'd send you some.

There are a lot of things you can do with them. I recently put some on the smoker and then used them in my Roasted Tomatillo Salsa recipe. It was really, really good. Next time I'll beware of the potential fireball that singed the front of my hair and eyelashes.
