Earthtainer drain hole sizes
Has there been any experimentation with larger diameter drain holes in the aeration bench? It seems to me the main obstacle with SWC is keeping enough oxygen in the growing medium. I was envisioning the surface tension of water preventing the water from freely draining through the holes if they aren't large enough. I guess these containers have been developed through trial and error so if this hasn't been tried I think I'll drill holes that are 1/4" or larger.
Also, has anyone tried drilling holes in the walls of the aeration bench and if so did it yield good results? |

You might not want extra holes as this could encourage nesting of mosquitos, etc.
The current design with holes at both ends provides adequate oxygen replenishment as the water level rises and falls. Raybo Last edited by rnewste; April 2, 2014 at 11:18 PM. |

I mean to drill larger holes at the bottom of the inner container.

As I recall, the instructions already have you drilling several hundred aeration holes today. Please experiment with a larger drill size, but be careful not to weaken the inner container too much.....
