Default Earthtainer drain hole sizes

Has there been any experimentation with larger diameter drain holes in the aeration bench? It seems to me the main obstacle with SWC is keeping enough oxygen in the growing medium. I was envisioning the surface tension of water preventing the water from freely draining through the holes if they aren't large enough. I guess these containers have been developed through trial and error so if this hasn't been tried I think I'll drill holes that are 1/4" or larger.

Also, has anyone tried drilling holes in the walls of the aeration bench and if so did it yield good results?
