where to find info on PI numbers??
Attended the Toledo Botanical Seed Swap yesterday. Wasn't at all what i was expecting but certainly was not disappointed. Many seeds supplied by Bakers Creek, Marianna, SSE, Olds, and even some from Amishland slightly outdated but great to have the chance to try some really outstanding varieties.
All the tomatoes from Marianna was easy to find the information but this one has me stumped. Taxon: Lycopersicon esculentum Accession Lot: PI 131879 70AI ID: Palo Blanco Origin: Argentina USDA, ARS Plant Genetic Resources Unit Cornell University, I have the 1994 SSE yearbook and found some PI numbers but nothing to match this one. What does the PI stand for? I am assuming the name for the tomato is Palo Blanco?? Thanks, Patty |

Hi, Patty - sometimes there is very little info - these are Plant Identification numbers that refer to the USDA GRIN database. I haven't been there for some years, but you can enter the PI number and the variety will come up with as much info as is entered into the db.
Here is the GRIN site - http://www.ars-grin.gov/

Thanks Craig, No info coming for either the PI no. or Palo Blanco from USDA GRin site. So will plant a few and see what comes and continue to look for anyone else growing it out. Patty

Patty,
There is actually a lot of information about the PALO BLANCO tomato. The bad news...outside of a bit of historical data, the tomato is rather Ho Hum. Rio Santiago, Argentina is the source area, just south of Buenos Aires. Collect by a P. Yatman in 1939, this person also collected Campana, Los Talas, Rey Humberto, San Marzano, and Varela. Most of these probably have precedents in the Mediterranean. The 47 descriptors of Palo Blanco are disappointing: Red fruits with yellow gel, barely 2 inches in diameter, slightly flattened fruits with 5 locules, rather poor yield, indeterminate as most varieties were in the 1930’s. I go to the accessions inquiry of GRIN quite often since much of my breeding work in potatoes and tomatoes has valuable links there. The link is on my tool bar!!!! For years I relied on a printed book form of the accessions. Later all of the data was on these continuous paper sheets that folded back and forth on themselves with those little holes on the sides. Now with the computers, I rarely go back to the paper documents except for highlighted PI numbers of material I received for breeding. If anyone wants to know how I access all the different links to the information on Palo Blanco, I could add to the thread. I only offer this as a potential tool for breeders and historians of tomatoes. If there are no curious readers, I will understand. Tom Wagner |
