Need some info on Pinnochio
No, I don't mean the little wooden guy. I'm talking about the tomato plant. I've looked all over the web and can't find much on it. I had two seeds that were old and got one plant and I want to make sure the container I put it in is large enough to prevent the stress of more transplants. It appears to be a dwarf, if not a super-dwarf similar to Tiny Tim or Totem. But I just don't know.
Does anyone who has grown it remember how large the plant got? I'd appreciate any help here. Curious Ted

Ted,
It is a small dwarf like Red Robin and not at all like Totem for me. Maybe use a 3-4 gallon pot for it. You southerners seem to use larger pots for your longer growing season so maybe a 5 gallon pot would be the size to use. Sue Sue |

Thanks, Sue. I did get one out of two on the germination. Because I check for water each day, I can probably use a two gallon nursery pot. Red Robin is supposed to be a 12" to 24" plant. How tall did Pinnochio get for you?

Hi, Ted. I grew Pinnochio in 2007 and 2008. I'd guess mine were around 18" tall. On the other hand, I think Red Robin was 10-12" tall here, so I found Pinnochio to be a bit taller. I think I grew it in about a 2-gal. container. Cute little fella!

Thanks, Sherry. I am really trying to decide whether or not it will fit into my Soda Bottle SWC's. I think I'll put it into something a bit larger this year and see how it does.

Hi Ted,
Sherry always grows bigger plants than I do. Mine was not that tall but wasn't short either. I didn't keep any records on it. Here is what Andrey has to say about it and where I obtained the seed. "mid-early, det., tree type dwarf, h-25-35 cm. plant with a fair (1-1.5 kg from a plant) yield of red, round to round oblate, neat 15-20 g. fruits, suit. for pot and patio growing. From Czech CV Moravoseed." Sue |

Thanks, Sue. 25-35 cm puts it in the 12" class and 15-20 g is about 3/4's of an ounce which makes it a medium-large cherry size.
I only have the one plant with no backup, so this one will become this year's "pet" - lots of TLC. Thanks to both of you ladies from "Frigid-ville" Alaska. Ted

Not so frigid today as ashy. Mt. Redoubt finally blew a few times overnight. Sherry may be getting some ash as the wind is carrying it north.
Sue B. PS- I have backup Pinnochio seeds if needed! |
