Default Question from a newbie about tomato plant

My question is : I have a tomato plant that appears to only have the starter leaves and no other leafs. It is at least 3 inches tall, if not taller, and it looks real healthy. Am I wasting my time with this plant or will it finally get to going? I have looked right in the middle of the leafs and I think there is possibly some new growth, but not for sure. I call this tomato plant my "rabbit ear plant" because that is what it looks like. I would appreciate any and all imput on this. Thanks

Keep cool, it will put on true leaves in 3 or 4 days. you might want to set it in the sun sounds like it might be a little leggy. GOOD LUCK BILL

Thanks brog for your reply. I forgot to say in my original post that I planted 3 trays with 72 cells in each tray, about March 18 2009 and most all the plants are big and healthy with several true leaves. I have noticed that I have 2 plants that only have the "rabbit ears" with no true leaves. Are these 2 some sort of deformed plant or do you think they will finally come around? Thanks

This is the first year I've started most of my plants from seed, but I've noticed some of my plants are a lot slower to start than others. I planted on March 13, and 2 or 3 varieties didn't germinate until about May 1.

any chance you can post a pic so we can see what you mean? Some times there are plants that never develop correctly. Look at container teds plant in this link from the brandywineX Tad cross. It is intresting

Yep, that plant is never going to proceed. It's a dud. Sorry man.

kymaterjuice, folks around here call it a "mule". You can let it go a while and see if anything else develops, but you are learning the same lesson I learned this year. I've had three of them already.

Appreciate your response Ted. Yes it does look more like a mule ear then a rabbit ear.

Thanks brog for your response. Yes, I have plenty of other plants. I will set out about 80 to 90 tomato plants. I enjoy making and canning tomato juice, canned tomatos, and salsa. Cheers my friend!

Nice looking plants there! Are those in tobacco float trays? If so, how do you like that set up? I've been pondering using those myself.

Hi Barbee and thanks. The tomato plants are in what they call vegetable trays. There are 72 cell in each tray. The tobacco trays have smaller cells and I think they have100 cells per tray.

I beg to differ - had 2 of those this year, and also one with only 1 cotyledon. Just left them to see what would happen; eventually all 3 developed true leaves, even the monocot. True, they are a bit on the puny side, and only time will tell if they every produce flowers...
