Tomatoes in Alaska

Thanks to some great weather this season, I'm getting lots of ripe tomatoes now.

Thanks, Craig. We've had a really great summer, although the rains have started now. High today was in the 50's I think. I'm hoping for a few more nice days though.

Let's see ... at the top is Cherokee Purple, then going clockwise is Orange Blossom hyb, 3 of the Galina's x GMG, Aurora, Grumpy/Sleeping Lady, Unknown P/L, Sun Gold, Orange 1, Malakhitovaya Shkatulka, and in the center are Native Sun and the Grumpy F4 we're comparing to Yukon Quest. I think I got them all.

And, yes, it did feel like Fall today. But I really need a few more sunny days.

Nice maters. If I read your post correctly the large dark tomato at 6 o'clock is Grumpy/Sleeping Lady and the red one in the center is Grumpy F4? Big maters. How could you be "grumpy" if you looked that good. All in all a nice looking crop.

Thanks, Len. Yes, the two you mention are both part of the dwarf project. And they are among my largest fruits this year. I find it really difficult to grow big ones here. I've never had a one pound tomato, but at least I have a goal!!!

I am going to be in Alaska for the State Fair. Am I likely to see tomatoes like these or will the weather be too fall-ish.

Ami and Heather, thanks! We were really due for a good summer here after the last two.

gladgourd -- Welcome to Tomatoville! It's great that you'll be here for the State Fair! That's about the time when our tomato harvest really gets going. I'm not sure what you might see at the fair as far as tomatoes though. Some years it's pretty pathetic. Somewhere here on T'ville a couple years ago I posted a picture of the tomato exhibit and it was pitiful. But you will get to see lots of other big veggies.

I hope you have a great time in Alaska. Is it your first visit here?

Hi Sherry,
It is my first visit. We are cruising (not my thing, but we had a great deal!) and then driving to Anchorage, just so that this gardener can go to the fair and see the veggies I have heard about.
I am excited!

I hope you're able to visit the fair during the latter part of the fair dates. There are two entry periods for veggies, I think, and the really big ones come in later. Also good if you can try to go on a week-day when there are no special events scheduled (such as 'kids get in free day'!!!). Less crowded that way. You can check the fair's web site for schedules (but you've probably already done that!).

Although we live only about 10 miles from the fairgrounds, we don't go every year, but we always have a good time when we do go. Seeing the veggies is one of my favorite things. You might be surprised to see some of the things that we can grow here.
