Default Favorite Paste / Plum Tomatoes

I am looking to expand my horizons and grow some paste / plum tomatoes this year.

Can you let me know what your favorites are and why you like them (ie. fresh eating, salsas, canning, sauces, etc...)?

Thanks,

Pat

Ludmilla's Red Plum for sure as well as perhaps:

Gianinni, a large red plum
Sarnowski Polish Plum, red, blocky elongated

More conventional paste varieties might include:

Mama Leone
Heidi
Opalka
Martino's Roma
VB-Russia, a pink

.....for starters and all the above are good tasting, excellent yields, etc., and I know darm well I've forgetten some other good ones.

I'll second Gianinni and I'll add that they were very tasty and productive for me this year. Carolyn was kind enough to share some seed with me last winter.

I'll second the VB Russia. Nice off the vine snacking tomato and the most prolific tomato I've grown. I actually believe you could feed a family of 2 all summer/fall on one plant

I grow tomatoes just for drying (have a business) and I tried Denofrio's German this past year. They were HUGE!!!! almost seed free and prolific. I also favor Federle, Carol Chyko, Romeo, Amish Paste, Chinese and, for just sauce, Constoluto Genovese or Costoluto Fiorontino. I want large,(and this is important because slicing small tomatoes for drying is a pain-in-the-behind) meaty tomatoes with little juice and few seeds for drying and these varieties have become staples in my garden.

Try Dinofrios ( not De) German which is the variety name.

I'm sure Brokenbar will tell you where she got hers/ I didn't Google it but since Marianne Jones at mariseeds has been listing it for many years in the SSE Yearbook you might try her website. And it is listed in the SSE Yearbook if you're an SSE member.

How about Brandysweet Plum? I've heard good reports, but 2010 will be my first year growing.

Hey Gary, Got them from the Seed Savers Catalog. If you want some, PM me with an address. These were the biggest paste/oxheart tomatoes I have ever grown. They ripened mid-season in Wyoming my Son told me (we were in Mexico most of the summer.) He also informed me that we had a lousy, cold wet spring so these out-did themselves in my opinion.

I also have a HUGE oxheart/Paste black that came unmarked from a seed swap. I can throw in some of those as well. They did really well also. And I say oxheart/paste because neither of these were a "typical" oxheart shape. Just big blunt things that were slightly misshapen.

Thanks for the correction Carolyn...I can't read my own writing! And I got mine from Seed Savers.

I would add Tony's Italian and a second on Martino's Roma. MR makes the most fantastic tasting sauce in the world, personally didn't care for them fresh, but the sauce, the sauce - have a freezer full of sauce. Carolyn sent my Gianinni also and while tasty, they set rather late in my area so I didn't have a huge supply. Definitely will try again. But MR and Tony's are now must grow every year. Piegirl

A few I like:

Christopher Columbus
Prue
Tony's Italian
Opalka
Sarnowski Polish Plum
Sheboygan
Amish Canning

To frogsleap - Brandysweet Plum is an oval/slightly elongated large cherry type, excellent though.
