Desert Specific Tomatoes
I was wanting to plant some tomatoes that may do better here in our desert climate, so I went to nativeseeds.org, which is the seed saving organization locally here in Tucson, and bought 4 packages of "desert adaped" varieties.
(By the way RussAZ if you read this, I will give you some seed if you want there were a lot in the package) These are the ones that I bought. Does anyone know anything about any of the varieties Taste, DTM, Size? Texas Wild Tomato Prescott Heirloom Tomato Ciudad Victoria Tomato Chiapas Wild Tomato There are several more, but at $3.00 a packet (they do put A LOT of seeds in there though) I just couldn't buy any more. Here is the link if anyone is intrested. http://www.nativeseeds.org/catalog/i...a79pisit9c1vp4 Sammiek. Tucson AZ |

CL, I'll be really interested in seeing how they turn out for you. Thanks for the offer, but I'm done with seeds for this season--all of my seedlings are ready for plant out next week. Since I don't have ways to protect the plants from summer heat (or a partner who is interested in cluttering up the back yard even more) I'm trying a different strategy this year. After the spring harvest is complete, probably by early July, I'm cutting back everything to a nub. Hopefully the plants will regrow and survive summer with their vast root systems intact. Maybe there will be something to harvest in the fall and early winter. This past year it was so hot I couldn't get any new seedlings hardened off for the longest time. I was picking large, green Black Krim tomatoes at Christmas. (Fortunately they ripened beautifully inside. Just ate the last scrumptious one yesterday!)
Oh, by the way, my virus/malware protection blocked me from going to the nativeseeds.org site. Said it detected a trojan horse. |

Hmmmm, I was able to go on at work, and from home and did not get that message. I am not sure what is going on there. Anyway I can copy and paste the descriptions for you.
Let me know how your plan works out, I may do something similar next year. I have tomatoes on the vine right now, Cherokee Chocolate, Isis Candy, Hezou, and one other that I am not sure about, but I have lights on them and am covering them every night and uncovering in the day. I will post pics soon. Take care! |

I tried to access the provided link and received this warning (you should seriously consider an active threat detector such as AVG, take a look at www.Komando.com):
Danger: AVG Search-Shield has detected active threats on this page and has blocked access for your protection. The page you are trying to access has been identified as a known exploit, phishing, or social engineering web site and therefore has been blocked for your safety. Without protection, such as that in the AVG Security Toolbar and AVG, your computer is at risk of being compromised, corrupted or having your identity stolen. Please follow one of the suggestions below to continue. I have AVG (not the free version, I just updated to the latest version with all available protections), and when I just went on to NNS it did tell me that there was a threat. I will call them (Native Seed Search) tomorrow and see if they are aware that this is on the website. Their Director of Operations used to work with me, so maybe I will give him a call.
I did not get this message the last time I went on there so this must be something that just has happened with them. Hopefully they will get it figured out. I will keep you updated with what they say. |

I just called Native Seed Search, and she said they are working on the Website problem right now. I will let you know when they get it resolved. As I said when I went on last week it was fine, but I guess they are having problems right now.
