Need one more tomato-cherry or smaller
Hello, I just planted seeds for Druzba, Box Car Willie and Kosovo. I have limited room and am growing them in 15 gallon tubs. I would really like a great tasting cherry type.
What's the best tasting cherry/grape/currant type tomato these days? Thanks for all your help. Haven't been able to grow more than one plant the last few years and it's great to be back! Janie |

Sungold is a good bet. If I could only grow one cherry type, that would be it.

Have to agree with Jen, SunGold is hard to beat. The plant, like most cherries I've grown, will get very large so just have to plan for that in the containers.

It's definitely Sungold, by far my biggest producer. I've been growing under low sunlight conditions and still Sungold gives up hundreds of tasty little tomatoes. (In the fall I had to take down my big maple tree that was causing the low sun conditions - this year should be amazing with normal sunlight.)

A different choice from so far posted: Black Cherry, Dr. Carolyn, Dr. Carolyn Ivory, Green Grape, Mexico Midget, Galina's Yellow. You might want to try more than one cherry per tub.

Black Cherry, Super Snow White, Swander Cherry, Gardener's Delight, Cerise Orange, Hawaiian Currant - all ones we preferred to Sungold

I've liked Galina's Yellow, Tommy Toe, Sun Sugar F1, Black Cherry, and Fox Cherry better than Sungold F1.

Another non sungold liker...tastes just strange to me...I tend to plant more large cherry / saladette types than cherries...Of those my favorites are Yellow Perfection, Marizol Magic, Gail's Sweet plum or Polish Dwarf...Of srtictly cherries I like Camp Joy, Pelican, Fence Row, or Peruvian Bush...

Thanks so much for all your info! I think it's a toss up between Sungold and Black Cherry.
Thanks again, happy 'mater growing! Janie |

Our family LOVES Riesentraube...in our clay soil up here in Michigan, Riesentraube turns very, very sweet - no bit of tang like with other cherry tomatoes. My 7 year old does not like tomatoes...but she'll eat those Riesentraubes right off the vine.

If you do go with Sun Gold try picking at different stages as it changes from light with slightly green at the stem/shoulder to dark orange the taste varies from tangy to sweet as you go through the gamet of changes - also it tears/splits easily so cut off a truss vs individually unless you are popping them right into your mouth - I grow it because a lot of people like it and it is a workhorse - but like quite a few much better Make sure Black Cherry is in a lot of sun otherwise you don't get the full flavor it is capable of Dennis |

mtbigfish,
Thank you for the growing tips! I don't have 8 hours of sunlight right now, so I need to grow something "forgiving". Hopefully, I will soon be able to move to more sunlight!! Thanks again for your input! |
