Default The 2010 Tomato LIST!

Ok so here is my 2010 list of seedlings. The letters/numbers are my system for keeping trays straight. For each variety listed I started at least 12 seeds and got 87% germination overall. The only variety not to germinate at all was Marvel Stripe. As far as peppers they are still slowly coming up so that list is just what I planted. Also in A1 and A2 are my first attempt at seed saving and all seeds are up and are TRUE TO TYPE (PL) so I think my attempt was a success. OK I know it is a lot of bragging but where else can I brag about this!!!

B8- brandywine X TAD

****

Now this one I have to ask about.

Tad Smith sent me seeds from a three way cross that he made and told me what he was looking for and said I had about 1 chance in 64 of finding it. I planted out only 12 plants that first year and found it. It's a small striped fruit and Tad asked that seeds not be shared b'c he wanted to upsize it. I sent seeds to Craig LeHoullier b'c he and Tad also knew each other and Tad said that was fine.

So Craig and I are, I assume, the only ones with Tad.

Craig believes that his Lucky Cross and Little Lucky might well have been a cross between Brandywine and Tad, and it was from selections from that initial natural cross pollination that Lucky Cross and Little Lucky were made.

So, what is your Brandywine X Tad cross and was it natural or deliberate and b'c I'm curious, where did you get seeds for it and what are you looking for.

Carolyn,

My seeds came from Craig. It was an offer to see what came out of the cross. There was alot of other information on the seed pack that craig sent out (dont worry I saved the seed pack for information). I didnt get a chance to start any last year so I am trying them this year and gonna report my findings to Craig. I will say this I planted 12 seeds and got 100% germiation (if I remember correctly).

What am I looking for.... I am looking for a 5 lb black tomato with a smoky salty taste that last for months off the vine. KIDDING

I actually have no idea what will come from these seeds. I will keep you and Craig up to date as to what leaf type and fruit show from the seeds he sent.

Sounds like it was some of the F2 or F3 seed from that original growout that
Craig sent out a couple of years ago.
I remember Craig growing out quite a few about 5 years ago, before the
dwarf project hit and began taking up the whole driveway!

Striped Sweetheart is one new variety that came out of my selections from
Craig's F3 growout in 2005. Lot's of interesting things to be found in that
cross.....

Lee that is exactly what it is from. But he sent me seeds at the end of 2008. The packet he sent me as the F # on it but I am at work and do not have the access. I will post the info later.

Thanks jt and Lee, now I understand.

Lee, how is your Striped Sweetheart, which I assume is stable, different from Lucky Cross and Little Lucky b'c it sounds like yours is a gold/red bicolor as well, or has it inherited some of the distinct striping that I found with the variety Tad? In which case I think you know what you can do with some of those seeds, which is to send some to the original home of Tad.

And no I haven't had a chance to go on a search and destroy mission for older Custralee seeds. My first priority is getting out some seeds that have to go to a few southerners, then some northerners, then to get my tax stuff done, but right now they're predicting 2-3 ft of snow here, possible blizzard conditions, starting tonight and going through Monday, so I just called Freda, my cleaner and garden person and asked her if she'd have some time this PM to bring up some milk, cat food, Diet Pepsi and some cookies to munch on before we get bombarded.
