Default Romanesco Broccoli almost ready for harvest!

These things have taken forever. I have already harvested a couple heads and they are worth the wait. I got my seeds from SSE, but I've seen alot of variances from one small package of seeds. These pictures below are one's that have grown the most true to form and color.

That is some nice looking Broccoli Romanesco.

Did you start the seeds under lights?

If yes, after transplanting how long did it take to get to this point?

You have some gorgeous broccoli there. I have planted it in the fall but couldn't leave it in the following spring because I need the space for tomatoes so mine has never made it to that point. It just takes so darn long!

Thanks for the comments everyone, they are worth the wait!

Dean- I started these late summer last year, so no I didn't start them under lights. From start to finish its been about 6 months.

How do they taste in comparison to common broccoli? I am thinking of trying to grow them over the winter down here starting the seed in September and hopefully getting to cut them in late February or early March so I can still get my tomatoes in.

b54red- they taste like broccoli but with a slighty nutty flavor, very nice texture much like cauliflower with just a hint of sweetness.

oh, shooot! I am just starting some this spring (winter-sowing, so they may come up in March). I can't grow broccoli through the winter here, I hope I have a long enough growing season here. Thanks for the heads-up, I will also start some regular broccoli. My husband will kill me if all we have is not-ready freaky broccoli.

when do these ding dang things set a head???? Planted seeds and transplanted in early to mid April. In the last 6 weeks - cooler temps, they are about 4 1/2 tall with huge leaves. Is there any hope they will form a head? Thanks - piegirl

Romanesco broccoli has been the Ichabod Crane of veggies, for me. Several years of trying, and not a single head.

Just a comment about those pics in the first post -- those heads are a bit "old" or over grown, not "almost ready".

Whenever you see those gaps or breaks between clusters, the gaps are just going to get bigger, not "fill in".

Thanks Tormato - the remaining plant will be removed tomorrow. Probably goes on the don't try again with brussel sprouts -4 1/2 ft tall plants and pea sized 'sprouts". piegirl

I tried growing broccoli (the common green) twice and I also have not benn able to produce a single head.. the plants where fine but no florets.. maybe its because of the weather here.
