Off-types so far (2010)
70% of tomatoes planted and many already got to true leaf stage, so I can do the 1st 'check':
Off-types found so far:
I am growing 209 new to me varieties this year, out of which 25 should be PL. 6 PL varieties show some degree of crossing - 28% (I have excluded Fritz Ackerman, which we concluded in the other thread that PL version is extinct). Most of these crossed seeds are commercial seeds. 1 PL variety have not got true leaves yet, so the experiment still continues. Edited on Feb 26 and Mar 8 to add more off-types (Jeff Davis, Black Brandywine, Black Pear) and updated %s Edited on Mar 13 to add another off-type (Gerig) and updated %s Edited on Mar 14 to add another off-type (Black Elephant) and updated %s

But there is no way at this point to tell how many of the RLs showing RL leaves are crossed.

But, as TZ_OH6 says, I do not know yet how many RLs will not grow true to type yet - we'll see! The bottom line is the season has begun, and it will be very exciting to watch the new varieties grow and produce Tania

Thank you so much for the offer - but I think I should be good with the two seedlings that show very typical foliage for Stick. I also kept one regular leaf off-type just to see what this may be (my normal curiosity) I am most disappointed with Fritz Ackerman - I thought I had the original PL, but obviously I did not. Well... folks say that the RL version is great tasting, so I should be happy at the harvest time. Tania

Tania, the three or four times I've grown Stick, I've gotten about 20% regular RL off types every year, both with the original trade seeds and with my own saved seeds. I did save one of the normals one year, and it was bad! Fruit was the same size and shape as Stick's, same uninspiring blah flavor without the novelty of the curly leaves. But who knows what you will get?

Dee, I think I will discard the 'normal' one then Is it possible that Stick may still be not stable? Tania

Well... I just discovered another off-type in one of my seedling trays:
Burcham's New Generation (commercial seed) - all 8 seedlings are PL, although they should have been RL, according to many SSE members listed this variety in SSE Yearbooks. The commercial source I bought the seeds from does not indicate leaf type. So mixups and crosses do happen indeed. I am hoping something good comes out from the PL Burcham Tania

All of my Stick seedlings were "true Stick" last year
(seems stable). I used to think it would be good for containers, because the extremely sparse foliage would not require much water, but on second thought it could have serious sunscald problems.

I am growing 209 new to me varieties this year, out of which 25 should be PL. Only 4 PL ones (excluding Fritz Ackerman which we concluded in the other thread that PL version does not exist anymore) show some degree of crossing - this is 16%, and 75% of which are commercial seeds. Quite high, I'd say. 4 PL varieties have not got true leaves yet, so the jury will be out in a couple of weeks on the remaining PLs. Tania

Burcham's is indeed RL - I grew it out many years ago, got it from the OS to the SSE. So goodness knows what you have there!
And who knows what Black BW is supposed to be - the first year they sold it from TGS I got a 50/50 mix of Pl and RL. the PL was pretty good, and RL was awful.

Well, another off-type/cross was discovered today among my Jeff Davis seedlings. 1 RL out of 3 seedlings.
... 20% of new to me PL varieties show some degree of crossing...
