Gary'O Sena
I was in my tiny greenhouse potting up some tomato seedlings when I ran into a problem. I had 4 seedlings of Gary O' Sena but only one is potato leaf. Is there also a regular leaf variety? If not I guess I'll only have one plant of GOS.

http://www.kdcomm.net/~tomato/releases/ All those who list this variety in the 2010 SSE YEarbook also indicate PL foliage. Was the source of your seeds commercial or traded seed?

Thanks Carolyn, that is what I thought. Got my seed for Gary O' Sena from Tatiana's.
I don't know if it is too late to replant and see if I get more potato leaf seedlings. I guess I'll tag the potato leaf one as GOS and ? for the regular leaf ones and see what they look like when they mature, if they do. |

I doubt that the RL ones can be IDed, and since there were several, it's not a stray seed and since PL is recessive to RL, it does tend to indicate a cross pollination problem, which can happen to any of us who don't bag blossoms, and most of us don't.

Carolyn, thank you so much for alerting me to this thread!
I checked my records, and I have ~10 customers who may have received Gary'O Sena seeds from the same batch. Unfortunately I sold out the entire batch that is a suspect, and cannot run any tests on it - so I would like to ask other Tville members who received the seeds from me to report on any off-types you got with Gary'O Sena seed I distributed. My records show that I collected seeds from the last 3 fruits at the end of August, which means they were 'set' at around the time we did not have any pollinators around (our bumble bees activities were highest in May/early June here in 2010, and I was avoiding saving seeds from early fruits). So it is really a bummer that I got a cross, given the situation . There is a small chance of a seeds mixup, as my mother-in-law was helping me to collect seeds from the last fruits. Anyway, I will start my own test with the remaining batch of seeds (from a different fruit), and will report the results here once I get the seedlings to the true leaf stage. In a meantime, b54red, how can I help you to rectify the situation? Please PM or email me. Tania P.S. In case we have a cross, the Gary'O Sena was growing in between the rows of Gail's Sweet Plum and Eva Purple Ball (which was identified as an off-type I called 'Eva Ruffled'). So F1 could be a smaller fruit, red or pink, who knows...

Gary'O Sena x Eva's Purple Ball would be a great cross. I'd be happy to take any of those seeds off anyone's hands and give them a happy home.

Only it will be Gary'O Sena X "Eva Ruffled" - as the 'Eva Purple Ball' that grew next to Gary'O was also an off-type (which I loved more than the actual Eva Purple Ball, taste-wise) Tania P.S. Eva Ruffled - http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Eva_Ruffled

If anyone desperately needs them, I have several thousand Gary'O Sena seed. Yes, that is the way Keith insists it should be spelled.

Just make sure you grow Gary'O Sena if you can as it was a real find for me last year. Most Excellent taste. A 9-9.5 on the 10 scale. Thanks, Keith.

Thank you all folks who are growing out the batch of Gary'O Sena seeds you received from me - please do report on the results (RL vs PL counts)

Just a note about the spelling in the yearbook this year for those who are SSE members - I got that changed last year (and explained why), but it has been changed back to the incorrect spelling this year for whatever reason. Grrrr.
Anyway (edit/add) - yes, it is a very good tomato. |
