Default First tomato sandwich lunch!

One of my first breaker tomatoes, a Steak Sandwich, (burpee hybrid variety) was fully ripe today, so I sawed two 3/8 inch slices out of the middle, slathered three pieces of bread with Hellman's mayo, salt and pepper, and dove in! Oh, that first 'mater sammich of the year was memorable! I know I'll be a little tired of them in September, but the first one was heavenly!

I was going to take a picture, but just couldn't wait....

Lucky you! I've only got little green tomatoes.

Timmah, I hope you get to eat those Better Boys soon, and may the juices of summer run down your chin!

Very kind wishes, indeed; and happily accepted. (=

How about throwing up some pics of those nice plants & 'maters. Before & after sliced shots would be sweet.

OK, I have a few pix that were taken a couple of days ago, but the sandwich slices pic will have to wait for the next breaker to ripen. It's about a day or two away, so when it magically transforms into a sandwich, I'll get a pic of that, too. In the meantime, here's some from the garden...

One of the cattle panels....

Cages on black plastic...

Black Pineapple....

Green Zebra.....

And, lastly, Opalka...

Those are looking nice indeed. That Black Pineapple is getting big. It seems the plants along the cattle panel seem happier than the ones in the cages?

Timmah, the plants on the cattle panels are about 10 days ahead of the cages. The caged tomatoes are just as happy as the cattle panel ones, I believe, but the difference is the setting out date. The rain prevented me from getting the black plastic down in time to have all set at the same time. The plants are all the same chronological age, however. Just the difference in when they got their feet in the ground...

Ahh, ok. By the way, nice spread of corn in the background.

Yes, the corn is looking good. That's soybeans between my garden and the corn, and they look good as well. All belongs to my farm tenant, as I got out of the framing business years ago.

The problem is that we've entered an extremely dry condition very quickly. Our last rain was about 10 days ago, and it wasn't very much. It's amazing how dry it's gotten since then. My yard is going brown, weed leaves are curling up, and I've been irrigating the garden every day for a week. My water bill will be enormous. If we don't get some rain, that corn will look good but not produce well. I hope that's not the case.

How about the e-town area? Dry there as well?

Yes, very dry indeed. Soil's tough as a rock, still nice and moist about a foot down though. That high pressure ridge that passed over us the other day actually drifted back west over us again. =/ Bought some corn from what appeared to be some Mennonite fellow day before yesterday; mighty tasty. =)

Hey Puzzley, Don't your plants grow higher than the Cattle Panels? And how do you handle that?
I am thinking about useing cattle panels next year.

Thanks
Ken
