I think that you would probably be the best to ask about my preacher joe plant. I was very proud of it til I picked a fruit from a pusta kolox plant and found them identical in looks. Does the enclosed picture look like a preacher joe to you? My seed came from two different sources, but mix ups do happen. Many thanks. KennyP

Kenny,
I hate to inform you that it doesn't look anything like Preacher Joe. PJ is a red tomato with slightly orange shoulders. You can find pictures on that other forum in last years taste tests. Sorry! Camo |

KennyP,
I'd definately save seed from it if you feel its a good tasting tomato, just wouldn't call it preacher joe. You might want to let the next one ripen a bit more to see what colors it turns into. Were these from someone in the Denver area? If so I can see what seeds I gave them and maybe figure out what you have as it does look like a few others I sent out. Enjoy it just the same. Camo |

Hi, Guys
Apologies to Camo; I did send Kenny the Preacher Joe seed. I had forgotten to tell you I got one pink fruit from the PJ I kept (it was badly damaged by 2,4d overspray and the one fruit was seedless!!!). My neighbor has the other Preacher Joe plant I grew and she said it's definitely red so I assumed I may have screwed up somewhere. I'll be getting at least one of hers for seed saving so I can try it next year. I had thought the pink fruit tasted very good but maybe I was just desperate!! Just for info sake, when this disaster happened (from another neighbor), I left one fruit on 2 or 3 varieties that I badly needed seed from. These were all seedless even though they obtained some size. Lost many plants but also had decent regrowth (had pruned the damage off) on many others. Kenny, if you saved seed, I'd love to have some (Camo might want some, too!). I'll pm you. Darlene |

Broke down and sliced one. I am no taste expert so all I can say is it was not extreme any thing. Kind of mellow. A bit of salt helped. I could live with these with no problem. Pictures do not show the pink properly.

These two photos look more like PJ. The first one didn't at all. at least on my monitor. I'm assuming it wasn't quite ripe. I usually don't pick tomatoes till the ripen on the vine. So off colors throw me. Anyone will tell you it's hard to identify a tomato by a picture, especially if its not ripe yet. None of my Preacher joes have ripened yet! Enjoy your tomatoes! Camo |

Darlene and Camo, the seeds i got from darlene are true as far as cowlick, amazon chocolate, lancaster county pink, and some black brandywine. I haven't tried them all yet, but so far cowlicks is the bomb!!! Good deal on that one in my locale.
I'll post more later after the title wave of toms is passed, 75 plants ripening in the next 2 weeks- Life is good!!! |

Hey, Pete
Good to hear from you and glad you're having success with your seeds (Pete is another #1 fan of Camo's!!!). I think this is the year for Cowlick's to shine-so much drier than last year. Can't wait for Kenny to taste his Cowlick's. (Let us know what you think of the Lancaster County Pink- really enjoyed it last year but didn't have room for it this year.) dms |

Greyghost,
I also didn't have room for Lancaster County Pink this year and I no longer have seeds for it. Its a good variety and I hope we don't lose that one. Still nothing happening with Preacher Joe yet! Looks like one that will be eliminated next year...I'm afraid there will be quite a few of those, so far, there are 6-7 keepers, would like to limit it to a dozen varieties. For those interested, have been posting individual reviews on that other forum, plan on doing the end of the year review on this one and at Mater Nation. Camo |

I'm keeping the Lancaster County Pink alive; my daughter's friends in
Lancaster, PA get a kick out of it because of the name-also it's quite good but it's one of those varieties from completely unknown origins. If I'm not mistaken, Preacher Joe was given to you by your friend Dana and don't I remember that it has quite a following in the Gettysburg/ Littlestown, PA area? Thanks for your review of Mrs. Benson-I know some on this site are growing it this year. I think it's a variety that deserves to become more popular. I got my seed from Underwood Gardens and I know it's sold by mariseeds/Marianna but have no idea of where it came from or what it's history is (maybe Carolyn knows?) Darlene |

Sorry, I missed catching this one with all the activity this week. I'm really Glad you'll be keeping Lancaster County Pink alive, its a good tomato but I had to make sacrifices to reduce the number of plants this year. Mrs Benson was real good! As was Liz Birt right behind it but the real winner so far this year is Bear Creek. WOW! What a tasty tomato! Knocked Dana's Dusky Rose right out of the #1 spot. I even sat down and compared: Bear Creek against Dana's Dusky Rose Amazon Chocolate, Swisher Sweet, Gary O'Sena, JD's Special C-Tex, Black Master and Vorlon and a smaller Indian Stripe. No contest...Bear Creek is the best tasting Black/Purple tomato of the year, not only the best of the blacks but the best of ALL the tomatoes so far. You know that's some pretty stiff competition! Thats all the Brandywines, Barlow Jap, Mrs Benson, Stump of the World, even Tarasenko6. It's super! Thanks for sending the seed! I'm not sure how large a following Preacher Joe has locally, but it was a family heirloom from one of her customers and it did great for me last year...not so much this year yet. Getting time for "In the Kitchen with..." Gotta go...Priorities! Enjoy! Camo |
