Quick Ramapo Question
Hate typing on the phone so I'll make it short - is there a commercial source for the dehybridized ramapo yet? I remember some here were working on creating it. Thank you.

Hi. The link isn't working for me, but being Rutgers.edu, I doubt it because I know they are offering the F1. I wish I could try an OP version.

I know two folks who post here at Tville who should have F6 or F7's, still coming true, so why don't you post in the Wanted subforum of the Seed Exchange and see if you get a response. If you don't I'll PM the one person and direct that person to your post there.

I will do that when I get home to my computer. Thank you much. I didn't know of you had gotten that many generations into it. What did you think of the tomatoes? I tried one today and thought it had more gel than most I like but it was also more acidic, which I do like a lot. Like when I was a kid.

I dehybridized Ramapo F1 b'c it had gone out of seed production. I had a friend in NJ who was able to get a 6 pak of F1's b/c lots of commercial people in NJ had sandbagged seeds of the F1. And I used those for comparison each time I made a selection as I dehybridized it. I also had a conncetion with a Prof at Rutgers and was able to get some F1 seeds from him to use for comparison. To me the OP version is essentially the same as the F1 and the person I know here who said the same grew the F1 commercially when he was in NJ . Since all varieties tested for pH have about the same pH it isn't more acidic than others, let's say it has a more agressive taste and it's a taste that I and many others like very much. It didn't take long before Rutgers, who had bred it in the first place, to bring back the F1 and offer seeds for it, which was the link you were given above. THey did the same for Moreton Hybrid, another one that had gone out of production/ Moreton Hybrid and Jet Star F1 and Supersonic F1 were all bred by Harris Seeds and I think very highly of all of them as well as to taste and production. Those three and Ramapo F1 were bred slightly after Big Boy F1 and Better Boy F1 and all of them were some of the earliest hybrids bred and all have stood the test of time. Harris was the last place that Ramapo F1 was offered before it went out of seed production, and now they're offering it again with cooperation from Rutgers, who offer both Ramapo F1 and Moreton Hybrid.

Yes, I am also assuming the one I tasted was an F1. The lady who was selling them had a sign that said ramapo, but I didn't ask more than that. I just wanted to taste one and found the market on the way to a deposition. To say I liked it a lot is probably an understatement. But I'd rather have a version that I can save seeds from. That reminds me - I have a bunch of brandy and pepper seeds drying that will need envelopes. I must remember to stop and get some on the way home today.

Not a problem at all. But if I were you I'd be sure to ask for OP Ramapo seeds at the F5 or F6, probably from the initial one I developed b'c you really don't want one where someone has just saved seeds form the F1 and has only F2 seeds and hasn't gone further than that with direct comparison with the F1 Ramapo and hasn't made any selections.

So thanks for suggesting Trudi's site but I don't know who donated those seeds and I'd rather have someone I know who I gave the seeds to directly share them with Jeff. Thanks for understanding.
