Default Gnats - How to win

If you are among the blessed who do NOT have a problem with GNATS, you should know that we hard working southerners here in northeastern Tennessee have hosted your share this year.

I wish for those of you, who are "gnat-less", to know that these little critters, endowed with a maximum capability to take "annoyance" and "bother me" to a whole new level, to know that your share of these vermin spent the summer with us. You are somewhat grudgingly welcome.

Now for the good part - I found a way to minimize them inside the house. When I googled and Binged the subject, I found several possible remedies. The one that caught my eye was the one I had all the parts of. Here's what we did and ......... VIOLA!!!! ..... It actually worked.

Take half a cup of Cider Vinegar, a splash of water, and a squirt of Dawn dish detergent and put them into a container of some sort (I used a Peanut Butter jar and a 9 ounce plastic cup). Place the container in the middle of the place where concentrations of the little beggars are found and let nature take its course.

If asked, I would have said that we started off with about a hundred or so. After using this "system" for four weeks, I figure I have caught (actually drowned) about 1000 or more. They follow the scent of the vinegar and fly into the jar. They move down and touch the soapy liquid ....... then a little later (like 7 seconds) you find them at the bottom of the jar. Beer can be substituted for the Cider Vinegar, but doesn't work as well.

This really works!!!!

Good tip. But really, don't waste good beer on the buggers! Sit there with a cold beer and watch them fly into their death traps. Much better way to utilize the beer.

Also works great for fruit flies.

Wineries here in Napavalley do the same thing. It works, cuz they can get real thick! Some buy the insectecutor bug zapper, but theyre expensive
