My experience with Gurney's has been excellent. I've been buying from them for the past 5 years and never a problem.

Gurney's, Henry Field's, Stark Bros. and a slew of other respectable, well-established gardening companies were gobbled up by a large direct-marketing firm named Foster & Gallagher a few years ago.

They stripped them of their assets, shuttered their individual locations (except for Stark Bros.) and merged their operations, but kept each name in use separately.

Long story short, they destroyed the sterling reputations of each company by supplying shoddy seeds and plants, along with poor customer service.

Foster & Gallagher went bankrupt and the trademarked names were all sold at auction to Niles Kinerk, operating under the name Scarlet Tanager, LLC, which is now based out of the old Schenley Distillery in Lawrenceburg, IN. See http://www.myseasons.com/

I've ordered from them since this all happened and have never had an issue.

Hi Mischka,

Thanks for the backgrounder on Gurneys, Fields, etc. Unfortunately, this seems to be the trend with old line Brick and Mortar businesses these days. Didn't Park Seeds just go through this recently?

I've placed more that 15 orders with them over the past 4 years and while some of my seed orders were sometimes shipped 2 or 3 weeks after I placed the orders, everything shipped to my satisfaction, especially the cages within one week.

As Gurney's with the 50% off sale is the main source I recommend for the EarthTainer 3 Convertible cages, I do hope they will continue the level of service to all that I have experienced with them. While other Sites carry the same Pea Fence (Burpee, Park Seeds) none of them offer the 50% off sale pricing that Gurney's offers.

Two years ago I ordered online from Gurney's a bunch of seeds, 3 out of about 20-ish were not what I ordered and it took a week and a half to get half the order and 3 weeks (total) to get the rest of them. Then last year (I hadn't yet found TV yet) and when I went to look online for somewhere else to order from there were so many choices that I was over-whelmed and Gurney's spend $50 get $25 off email showed up so I thought what the heck, I'll get them there again. This time, it took 3 weeks to get one garlic pod (which had some kind of powdery fungus on it) and it took 5 1/2 weeks to get the seeds I ordered. I started emailing about the seed order right after the garlic showed up and they never answered any of these emails. Their MO just seems to be ignore it and sooner or later it'll go away. Then when the seeds finally did show up, over 25% were the wrong ones. They even sent several lettuce packets instead of some tomatoes and cucumbers. I emailed about this which they also ignored for for 4 days and when they did respond it was just form letters which when you respond to that, you just get another form letter which indicates that they aren't really reading your emails to begin with. So I called and told them I wanted my entire order cancelled and refunded. They didn't seem to care at all, never apologized for any of it, said they don't want the seeds back and they'll refund my money which they did. Their attitude made it seem like this kind of thing happens all the time with them and they just don't care.

Just because something is cheap or inexpensive does not make it a good value. I understand that mistakes happen everywhere but their entirely crappy customer service is why I'll never order from them again. Since finding Tomatoville I've found that there are a whole lot more honest and caring family-run businesses where I would rather spend my money.

I am sure your unpleasant experience has left a bad taste in your mouth for Gurney's. Let me share an experience I just had with them.

I have ordered a total of 6 Pea Fence cage systems (2 cages per system) from Gurney's over an 18 month period. I recently noticed that contrary to the description on their website that each cage is 8 feet long and made up of 7 panels (which their original ones did), their Manufacturer is now including only 6 panels totaling 7 feet in length.

When I emailed Gurney's to suggest they correct their website and indicated I had been "shorted" 12 linear feet of total cage lengths, they sent me a new Pea Fence package of 14 feet including shipping at NO CHARGE to me!

So, my recent experience with Gurney's has been quite positive. Just another data-point for all to consider.

I don't see Gurney's listed here so they must be doing something right. how to avoid monsanto

Hi Raybo,

Ok they fixed it for you after you brought it up, but their website still says "Hinged sections of galvanized 8-inch mesh are 32 inches high and 8 feet long". How long ago was it that you informed them

I can still find plenty of other places with whom I would rather do business with.
