Doubloon
I have seed that I got from Tormato I believe.
Has anyone here grown it and if so can you tell me a little bit about it?

I got Doubloon seeds from David Lemasters in 2008, but have not grown it yet. It came as a gift, with no description.
A quick googling did not help me much to find any details about this variety, but I have a picture of a fruit at TOMATObase, donated by Patty Brown from Ohio: http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Doubloon. Not sure where she got her seeds from, could be from David as well. Tania

Tania, also got seeds from David for Doubloon. Maybe we ought to grow it out and see what we come up with. Ami

No, he isn't. I've met David under another name in another forum and have to check whether he's a Tomatovillian, too, but he is not Tormato, for sure. I had Doubloon seeds from David and started them last year, but due to heavy health problems, I couldn't transplant the seedlings. I'll look in my records and if I find something interesting for you, you'll get a pm. clara

No, but I think David got his from Tormato, not sure but that would be my guess. I know when I first grew it, I put it in my list of reds, not having any idea what color it might be and that developed into some conversation somewhere as to it being an orange, which I found out after growing it..... As I remember nice size and good flavor for that year. Patty

Now at F6, it has appeared to be stable for the past two years. The first three fruits I harvested for seed, in late 2008, had 0, 0, and 4 seeds. End of season fruits had more, but I still didn't gather a whole lot of seed. Some had only one, to a few, very small closed up locules with virtually no gell. These fruits were almost solid flesh. A gold, flattened beefsteak, 5-12 ounces, with very sweet taste. I've named it "Doubloon". It's available in the "Have" forum under dwlcrl's list, or via a PM in my direction. Gary |

Patty,
Good guess. And, thanks for finding the older thread, so I don't have to type so much. I will add that the original seed (Sojourner South America) was from Chuck Wyatt. Updating; My 2009 plants were lost to late blight. 2010 (from 2008 saved seed) produced one plant with pink fruit, so either Doubloon is not yet stable, or it crossed with something else in 2008. This year I will be sowing 2007 seed, which produced only Doubloon. I'll also likely trial one plant from saved seed of the pink fruited one in 2010. Gary |

Gary, thank you so much for the additional info! I updated the TOMATObase records accordingly - the only thing I do not have is your last name, so if you wish it to appear there, please PM me.

Duane,
Doubloon has been a fairy short plant, for me (4' - 4 1/2'). I plant it south of the tall ones, so it doesn't get shaded out. Gary |

Plant is about 4.5 foot tall now and looks really healthy. But for whatever reason it has only set 2 fruit. Plants right next to it are setting fine so I have no idea why
