So if it's not Opalka..... what is it?

I've never grown a pear, because "MOST" have cr@p flavor (or lack thereof)....
Any ideas of what this one may be?
Was s'posed to be opalka.....
Approx 2 inches long.

Mine are shaped a lot like yours. Maybe not quite so "pear shaped", but long with a blunt end. Not a pointed end. Somewhat like the front tomato in the bottom picture. The plant is compact too. The Earl's Faux is probably a foot taller than the Opalka now.

KC...u got me...Friend. That dont look like an Opalka at all, to me. mine are pointy on their ends, an grow cylindrical, not pear-shaped. Would like to see a photo of the Plant (s) from a stand-back perspective. Will try an post some good Photos of Opalka ...soon.

Definitely not Opalka and I wondered, based on your other Opalka thread, when you'd come to that conclusion. :wink:

Rather than trying to come up with the names of some pear shaped varieties I think it's best that you share with us where you got the seeds from.

If from someone's saved seed not bagged or otherwise isolated then all bets might be off in terms of it being a cross and not a distinct variety.

Right now you don't even know what color the fruits will be. Correct?

I started several Opalka plants from seed this year. I kept one for myself and gave the others away. The one here with me looks like Opalka. I gave my wife's Grandparents one and it looks just like Don's. I am fairly certain I can track down one more plant and see how it turned out.

My seed was acquired through a trade.

I forget ... Did I send seed to you too ???!!!
I was really under the impression that
"blunt ends" of Opalka were results of environmental
conditions -
It occurred on the plants in
the ground (on same plant) ,
as well as in 5 gallon pots (on same plant) -

I only grew 5 varieties of tomatoes last year :
TomCat (hybrid from Totally Tomatoes)
Opalka (from Totally Tomatoes)
Juane Flammee (saved seed)
Yellow Pear (saved seed)
Large Yellow Cross (saved seed)

The Opalka's were in a row by themselves (4 deep)
with 3 feet on each side
away from all other matos -
Sorry guys -
Lame .... hopefully you get a pointed fruit !!!

Dont' worry Barky - it will be red -
My plants did this for
some weird reason last season -
Some pointed fruits some blunt fruits
all on the same cluster !!!??? -
Thought it was normal (dang rookies aka me) -
I only saved seed from
pointed fruits (once I looked fro pic on internet) ...
but looks like .... its in the genes ...
They all still tasted
exactly the same ... awesome ....

The mystery just got deeper folks ---- Tom, I did not get my Opalka seed from you.

I don't believe apologizes are not necessary from anyone. My favorite Tomato so far this year is another unknown.

One of my favorites last year was supposed to be Opalka from a seed trade, but grew out as a big red beefsteak instead. I'm growing it again from saved seed to see if it grows true or was just an accidental cross. How many faux Opalkas can there be!?
