Default Give away offer, Casino Chips, A true cherry paste tomato

Sorry but the seed offer is now closed. I had 30 requests in 6 hours, wow. I have enough seed to fill all the requests and to those who are getting the seeds ENJOY and happy gardening.

Hi everyone: I have a true Italian cherry paste tomato that I would like to share with TV members. I grew it myself, and here is the story.

My Italian neighbor Pat Cici was born and raised in a small town called Casino, Italy. Pat Cici came to the USA when he was a teenager and in one of his pant pockets he had his familys paste tomato seed and in the other pocket he had the familys Italian roasting pepper seeds. Pat Cici is now in his 70's. There is no name for this Italian paste tomato but since we have been sharing the seed with people we had to name it and we are calling this big Italian paste tomato "Casino" after Pat Cici's home town in Italy.

Now we get to the cherry tomato:
A few years ago Pat Cici noticed a sport on one of his tomato plants. It grew a branch that had 6 cherry tomatoes on it. We ate 2 cherries and they were identical in taste to the mother plant except these were cherries. Well Pat saved the seed and we grew them out. All the plants had perfect cherries. This is an OP variety that is rock solid stable. it is a true paste tomato. great eaten fresh and makes fabulous sauce. Indeterminate, tall plant 8 feet plus, and huge, huge production and the cherries almost never crack. This should be a great plant for breeding. We call this cherry "Casino Chips" (a chip off the old block) a personal favorite.

If you want some seeds "Casino Chips" send me a PM and a SASE and I will send seeds to the first 25 people. Its one of my favorites so I have plenty of seed. I dont have seeds to the original paste tomato called "Casino" Im out, but I will have more seed next year. I dont need to trade. If you want some Casino Chips, just ask.
Joe

Well, I can't send you an SASE with the PM you asked for, so how about my Pming you for your address and then I can send you an SASE.

What you describe that happened that turned a paste shape into a cherry is called a somatic mutation, one where the mutation occurs in the DNA of a plant cell and not in the seed DNA. I've been lucky enough to see two of them, one was with Green Gage and the other with an italian variety called Dix Doight de Naples where one branch had totally different shaped fruits than what would be normal for the variety.

With the Green Gage, which is yellow when ripe, one branch had red fruits. And the variety Yellow Risesntraube came about b'c there was ONE yellow fruit on a plant that otherwise had normal red fruits.

I would expect your cherry to have the same taste as the paste it came from as you noted, just a shape change, but that begs the question of what you thought of the taste of the paste itself since most aren't known for great fresh eating taste.
