Default Bloody Butcher not pl?

Picked up some Bloody Butcher seeds from Burpee. All of the seed I put down is showing RL and not the PL that it is supposed to be! So, should I cull them now or grow them out to see what kind of cross it becomes?

There is a fair amount of RL seed out there for Bloody Butcher and has been for a few years. The RL one is an imposter, and isn't as good tasting as the correct BB.

Fruits are small and red, plants are on the compact side, but that's where the similarities end. I grew the Not Bloody Butcher in '08.

If I recall correctly, there were also a couple other vendors distributing the RL Not BB besides just Burpee, at least at one time.

Burpee still hasn't fixed this after 3 years?

Apparently not.

Either that or erlyberd has an older seed pack. Erly, what was the lot # and date on your pack?

Why in the world would Burpee fix a (blank)-up when people keep buying the wrong seed? Hint: Don't trust Burpee for correct seed. Go to a vendor who cares enough to sell you the right stuff.

So it sounds like they are culls then. Luckly BB is the only Burpee seed I bought! It makes me angry to know that I wasted my time and money. There is a particular reason why we choose certain varieties then to have the wool pulled over the eyes really stinks. I guess there is always next year to try again. Sorry Burpee can't be trusted again! Packed for 2011, Lot #2 if that helps. I bought them around two weeks ago. So out of the 45 varieties I'm currently growing only a two are imposters then.

Thanks, and so I guess Burpee is still currently distributing the NOT Bloody Butcher.

Erly, if you still have time to start more seed, send me a PM with your address and I can get some correct BB right out to you.

After reading this, I had to run down the basement and check if my Bloody Butcher was RL or PL as I new I had bought a Burpee pack this year, but my records showed I did not use the Burpee seed and I do have potato leaf plants. I'll now have to start a couple of Burpee seeds just to see if they throw RL or PL. My Burpee seeds are packed for 2011 and Lot #1. It will be interesting to see what these seeds will produce.

I sent them an e-mail:

Quote:
The Bloody Butcher seeds being sold by Burpee on seed racks and from your website is an off-type. Bloody Butcher is properly a Potato-leaved tomato variety. Yours is a regular-leaf and does not have the same flavor. This has been reported since 2007.

I cannot wait to see the reply to that email. I've sent them two emails in recent years about varieties with issues and the replies were short, sweet, and self serving.

Yah, they would be, when you're trying to push hybrids that pretty much all taste similar no matter the name, I can see why they can't get excited about customer complaints -- after all, in their mind, a red tomato is just a red tomato and who ARE these people fussing about what the leaves look like?

I may have the same pack...Burpee Bloody Butcher from 09 and it says potato leaf on the description. Purchased at Ocean State Job Lot here in CT. They did produce pretty impressively last year for me, good flavor, and early. Sad to say however, I can't remember making a note if the plant was potato leafed or not. So if it wasn't the true bloody butcher, what was it?

Remember when Burpee was run by a seedsman? Now it just seems to be a label.

Help! This discussion is zooming way over my head. I have a very small garden and this year I decided to throw caution to the wind and try other varieties. Bupee's BB was on the rack at a big box store and I bought a pack. Soooo, will it underperform, turn out an inferior mater or what?
With the space I have, I can plant six (6) big producers (fingers crossed). I put up 5' cages and, in the past, most have made it over the top. Will the Burpee BB just sit there?
The BB seeding is coming up nicely but is there trouble ahead?
Thanks in advance.

bboomer, it's just if your seedling is not potato leaf, it's not the real Bloody Butcher.

As I'd said before earlier in the thread, I've grown the imposter. Think it was for fall crop '07 (or maybe it was '08), and Feldon also grew a plant from those seeds I'd started.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the taste. Feldon can correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, I don't think he was either.

I can't tell you how tall the imposter will get because I ended up just pulling my plant after tasting the first few fruits, but the correct Bloody Butcher is on the compact side and probably gets about 4 ft max.

Hope that helps.
