So I was at a local Whole Foods market here in Tulsa yesterday and stubbled upon a gang of heirloom tomatoes. I looked them over, handled and smelled them, and decided to take two of them home - one pink, which I have yet to eat, and one black. The sticker on them said Sunny Valley Organics and that the tomatoes were a product of Mexico.

After picking up my daughter from school I showed her the tomatoes and asked her to pick the one we were to eat. To my joy, she picked the black one. We sliced it up and sprinkled some sea salt on it. When I bit into it, the texture and flavor were simply amazing. Immediately I thought, "This is as good as any tomato I've grown with the exception of Cherokee Purple." Come to find out, it was probably a CP I was eating. Highly recommended.

So we ate the pink one Friday night and all I can say is wow. Reminiscent of Brandywine, but probably more on the sweet side. I know it sounds like I'm pitching for them, but I would never compromise my integrity that way. I don't do commercials.

Bottom line is that these tomatoes, at least the two kinds I sampled, are high quality organic tomatoes with rich and complex flavor.

I'm just dumbfounded because I've never been able to purchase excellent tomatoes in a grocery store, not even the ones that cater to local farmers. In fact, I've never bought anything as good as these at a farmer's market. I'm thinking about going back tonight and getting a couple more to try.

So I sampled another selection from Sunny Valley Organics, this one a yellow tomato that the web site identifies as Yellow Brandywine. Though it had a good meaty texture, the flavor was severely lacking.

The one I earlier identified as being pink, as it turns out, was Red Brandywine. I think it was just a bit under ripe, so it looked pink.
