5/23/11 - Finally Planted Some Tomatoes
First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the tornado/storms in Missouri and Minnesota last weekend. Here's hoping everyone survived and is doing ok.
It seems every time I go out to the garden this spring the clouds open up and a torrential rain comes bearing down on me. I had a killer frost take most of my seedlings that I started on my own. In sum, I've had a run of bad luck in the garden this spring. However, thanks to Bitterwort (Shelly S.) I was able to find some seedlings for my gardens so that I can get going again. I also had a gift certificate at Tangletown Gardens and they happen to stock 80 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Here's the list for my backyard garden: Rose KBX Stump of the World SunGold Prue Brandywine Sudduth Wes Aunt Ginny's Purple Lucky Cross Golden Cherokee Earl's Faux Black Cherry Chadwick Cherry Jaune Flamme Gianini Gold Medal 1884 Purple Yellow Brandywine |

I haven't gotten a tomato plant in the ground yet. My screenroom is covered in tomato plants. Too many cold nights, tornado warnings and hail storms lately.....I haven't had the guts to do it.
They are predicting possible hail this evening. Looks like Friday is tomato day! |

We've had hail two time so far this spring. Luckily, the hail hasn't done too much damage.

Hi Tam91!
National Weather Service is calling for small hail and gusty winds this evening. Storms may be severe throughout the day. I read on some of your posts that you said you had planted. I was so close to planting last week but I am just too chicken. This weather is so up and down. Remember we supposedly hit 90 a few weeks back and then had frost warnings later that week. 80 one day and then lows at 40 a couple of days later. One morning my thermometer read 39. You know our weather. Plus, I know my neighborhood got hit with that hail storm last week. Many neighbors have once again reported hail damage on their roofs. The construction companies have been swooping through the hood once again. However, that storm only damaged one of the pepper plants I had put in. I desperately need to get them in the ground. Friday looks like the day. |

We've had two hail storms come through in the past week. Last one was tennis ball sized. Insurance companies are likely getting sick of this area, we just got our roof replaced 6 months ago from last years spring storms and the roofing companies are already showing up offering free inspections.
Add in frost warnings for tonight and I'm thinking I'll stick with carrying them in and out for another week. Weird spring. |

When the hail started I made a quick dash to my garden. I felt helpless and had to retreat inside. Suprisingly, every plant made it through okay. A few broken branches here and there but everything else seemed fine. It was funny that when the insurance inspector came out, the side of the house with all the tomato plants is where all the major hail damage happened. I felt very fortunate. Now with the recent storms, all the folks that didn't get new siding and roofs last Summer all seem to have Home Improvement company signs in their front yards. FREE INSPECTION signs are everywhere! Lots of damage with these Spring storms around here. It has been a weird Spring. Like I mentioned earlier, it is one extreme after the other. One day last week I planted some flowers and I actually think I got a bit of heat stroke. Working in the sun really got to me that day. Two days later, the furnace is back on. |

Wow, supposed to be cool tonight (42) - the tomatoes should be fine though. I'll plant out my peppers and herbs friday, then it looks like we're (finally!) warming up.
I got my beans planted late, early this week, I hope they hurry up and get going.

Been outside yet today? What a miserable day! Everything is mushy, puddles, mud, gloomy, etc. I would guess my daughter's softball game will be cancelled again. Fields are just too soggy. NWS also has at at 80 on Sunday and 86 on Monday... That will be nice! |

Yes I have been out, and yes it sure is miserable. What a non-spring.
Thanks, I will be keeping a careful eye on the weather too. Ick, I hope I don't have to cover all these plants - phooey!
